The railway still relies on its fleet of steam locomotives. NMR comes under the jurisdiction of the newly formed Salem Division. In July 2005, UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the site then became known as “Mountain Railways of India. The ‘Nilgiri Passenger’ train covers a distance of 26 km (16.2 miles) travels through 208 curves, 16 tunnels, and 250 bridges. It has the steepest track in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%.
After the journey, the driver will meet you at the Ooty railway station and thereafter you will drive to Munnar.
Munnar is over 5000-foot-high mountain station surrounded by a stretch of mountains covered with 1,20,000 hectares of tea plantations. Munnar is the trade center for special teas, lying on one of the world’s highest cultivating areas. Upon your arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for rest and refreshment. In the late afternoon you’ll enjoy a boat trip in Periyar Wildlife National Park. This park is one of the world’s best places to see elephants in their natural surroundings. Before sunset, you’ll also be fortunate to see other wild animals visiting the bank of Periyar Lake to drink and eat. You can also enjoy a pleasant walk in the markets before returning to your hotel. If you love Indian food, a visit to spice shop is must here! An overnight stay in Thekkady.
